Kevin Krigger wins Santa Anita Derby

kevin kriggerIt was Kevin Krigger week at Santa Anita

Jockey Kevin Krigger enjoyed the best week of his riding career when he bagged four wins at Santa Anita last Friday and followed that with a masterful ride to win the 750,000 Santa Anita Derby on Goldencents on Saturday (April 6th).

Krigger was maligned for his ride on Goldencents in the San Felipe Stakes in March where he engaged in a suicidal pace battle with Flashback only to fade down the stretch. Trainer Doug O’Neill stuck with Krigger for the Derby and was rewarded with a flawless ride to capture the West Coast’s premiere race for 3 year olds.

Horse Racing can you humble you quickly

Fresh off his big Santa Anita Derby win, Krigger ventured up to Golden Gate Fields the very next day (Sunday) to ride two horses for trainer Neil Drysdale.

Krigger finished fourth on the 5-2 second choice, Vamo a Galupiar in the Golden Poppy Stakes. Two races later, Krigger finished second on the 6-5 favorite Topic in a maiden allowance race.

Not the results he was looking for, but still a sweet week for this native of the Virgin Islands.

TOC calls emergency meeting. Really?

Hollywood Park has been threatening to close its doors for what seems like forever. So it is surprising to hear all of this scrambling to figure out who is gonna fill the void when it comes to racing dates, stabling issues etc...article on TOC meeting

Wait a minute, did I say surprising? What the hell is wrong with me? This is California Horse Racing, nothing should surprise anybody.

On that note, it was refreshing to hear (Kentucky Derby Winning) trainer Doug O’Neill’s comments on Roger Stein’s radio show last Sunday. Now I am paraphrasing a bit here but O’ Neill called the present marketing efforts at Santa Anita “sad”. Listen for yourself  Sunday April 7th about 56 minute mark

HRTV Film Festival “Underwhelming” for 2013Bad films

As I stated last week, I am a fan of the HRTV Film Festival. I think it is a superb and creative idea and hopefully it will continue.

That being said, the 2013 entries leave much to be desired. The 2012 entries were better. As of this writing I could not heartily endorse anything, but I will vote for someone.

More on this next week, including my selection.

Thanks for reading,
