Bejarano, Gomez tough on turf…..Pick 6 Bonus a flop?

Rafael Bejarano (18 wins) and Garrett Gomez (13 wins) have accounted for almost 40 percent of of all turf winners at the current Santa Anita meet.

Is Pick 6 Bonus Working?

The new Pick 6 Bonus promotion going on at Santa Anita is certainly not a bad idea, I mean giving extra money to winning horse-players is hard to fault. What I am wondering though, is it creating the interest that it was intended to?

Has this Pick 6 Bonus increased handle on the Pick 6? Not from what I can see. Increased attendance? I don’t think so.

It is just not “in play” enough. If nobody hits the Pick 6, not only is it not in effect, but the next day is not either because there is a carryover.

As of today (Feb. 16th), there has been six straight racing days where this promo is not valid because of three carryovers.

In a nutshell, there just seems to be no buzz about it. Now the Cash Call drawing during the Autumn Meet, that drew some attention.

Santa Anita Hits and Misses Feb. 2nd

Santa Anita Presents Full Fields for Strub Day

With the exception of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, Santa Anita has carded a very nice competitive day of racing for Strub Day.

Triple Crown Challenge Not So Challenging

Santa Anita starts a new three race “challenge” series today with the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. The rules state that each customer can select 3 horses on their contest card, and you are allowed 2 cards per person, which gives you 6 selections. Well, the Robert B. Lewis stakes has attracted a whopping 4 entries, so if you don’t advance to the next race then you are not trying very hard.

DRF “Guarantees” a $400,000 Pick 4 Today

This is one of the funniest promotions of the meet so far. Why? The late Pick 4 (which is the one guaranteed for 400k) has not been less than $562,000 the past four Saturdays. It has gone over $600,000 in three of the past four Saturdays!

Sunshine Millions Attendance Not So “Sunny”

Was it the weather or the promotions? Sunshine Millions attendance dipped badly this season and may not be the attraction it once was. The on-track attendance of less than 15k had to be disappointing to Santa Anita Officials. What I found even more interesting is the lack of news articles that touched on this subject. My advice: A name band for the KROQ Promotion would be a good start.

Good Luck and Thanks For Reading.

Dont Taint the Pick 6 Bonus with Deception

Good promotion, but give the players all the facts

Whether the new Pick 6 Bonus that rewards winning tickets purchased on-track with 20 percent more (on non-carryover days) turns out to be a success or not, you can’t argue that it is not good for the player who enjoys a day at Santa Anita.

I did get a kick out of Santa Anita’s Press Release today. They mention that there were seven winning Pick 6 tickets purchased on-track  (Who cares? there is no bonus in effect on carryover days). They actually mention this twice (I marked it in red and underlined). A little deceiving I say.

They go on to say how you can earn this Pick 6 Bonus, but fail to tell the reader about the retroactive rule that is in effect for the month of January. It is quite simple and I have posted it below (bold).

Here is part of the actual press release from Santa Anita (in quotes).

“PICK SIX CARRYOVER CREATES HUGE TOTAL POOL OF $482,285; 41 WINNING TICKETS PAY $6,949 EACH, SEVEN HIT ON-TRACK, 20 PERCENT ON-TRACK PICK SIX BONUS IN EFFECT FOR SATURDAY AT SANTA ANITA
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 18, 2013)”

“With a Pick Six carryover of $59,161 serving as a catalyst, punters ran the total Pick Six pool on Friday to $482,285. There were 41 winning tickets, seven of them purchased on-track, which each paid $6,949″.

“Santa Anita’s 20 percent on-track Pick Six bonus will be in effect on Saturday, as any winning ticket purchased at Santa Anita will be worth 20 percent more than the pari-mutel payoff. Fans are required to join the Thoroughbreds Club and to scan their membership cards prior to making Pick Six wagers, in order to be eligible.”   →→ See  Retroactive Pick 6  Bonus rule below

Retroactive Pick 6 Bonus Rule

If you hit the Pick 6 on track and are entitled to the bonus but forgot to scan your card, you may still collect the bonus in the month of January.  Also, if you are entitled to the bonus and do not have a Thoroughbred Card, you may sign up and still receive the bonus in the month of January.

Please see the Santa Anita Information Window for more details.
